“Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, or EMDR Therapy, is an evidence based mental health treatment helpful for easing distress associated with a multitude of mental health disorders. It is a structured therapy that encourages the client to briefly focus on a disruptive memory tied to a negative cognition about themself, while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements, sounds, or taps). The bilateral stimulation accesses different parts of the brain and encourages communication that betters emotional processing and regulation.

EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR therapy may be used within a standard talking therapy, as an adjunctive therapy with a separate therapist, or as a treatment all by itself. “
